31 Days of Color

One of my goals this year was to participate in the Nester’s 31 day challenge. The challenge is to write a post for every day in the month of October pertaining to a particular theme. I decided to write about a very relevant concept in home decorating, color.

Brad and I are in the midst of buying our first home. This process has been exciting and stressful all rolled into one, but the word that keeps coming to mind when I dream about owning our first home is hospitality. I have a general definition of the word, welcoming people into your home and making them feel comfortable, however I want to learn more. I want to know the practical ways I can make my home hospitable. Is hospitality an adjective or an action, and I want to know if God values a hospitable home. I have a guess that He does; it’s just something I’ve never really taken the time to look at before. Brad and I both recognize this new home as a blessing, and we’d like to be intentional about turning it around and utilizing this home as a blessing to others. I’m sure hospitality fits in there somewhere, I’m just not quite sure how. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more about how to live out hospitality.

Why Nate Berkus Would Love My Blog

I’m not trying to sound arrogant or anything, but I truly think if Nate Berkus stumbled across my blog, he would love it (or at least the name) and here’s why...

In the September issue of Better Homes & Gardens, I was reading an article called Stylemaker Notebook. This article featured designers and their tips to help you personalize your home. That’s when I read,

I was giddy to read that Nate Berkus and I have the same philosophy on home decorating! He perfectly summed up the meaning behind the name of this blog. The article finished with Nate’s tips for a personalized home including collect what you love. He said, “Your things tell a story- where you’ve been, who you’ve loved, where you hope to go. It’s those very things that bring meaning to our homes.”

I couldn’t agree more, Nate!

Fall Color Schemes

I like the idea of using out-of-the-box color schemes when decorating for fall, but I was lacking a bit of inspiration. So I used an online tool from Sherwin Williams called Chip-It (also talked about here) to help. Here are some unusual color schemes that would be perfect for the upcoming fall season.

I’ve had an eventful summer, from moving across the country, to starting a new job, and taking a one week course on redesign and staging (details coming soon!) Blogging this summer has been inconsistent at best, so I’m looking forward to the start of fall and settling back into a routine. Over the summer I’ve made a few new goals for The Story of Home, and sharing them with you helps keep me accountable, so here goes!

  • Paint an abstract work of art. Some time ago (back in Feburary, yikes!) I mentioned that I wanted to attempt a painting, and I still haven’t gotten around to it. Guess I better get moving; I’ll let ya know how this goes.
  • Participate in the Nester’s 31 day challenge. If you haven’t heard about it, you can find more information here. I wanted to do this last year but couldn’t think of a topic for the life of me! Instead I did a series called Risky Business and promised myself this October I would write a post for everyday in the month.
  • Launch my small business. Wow, it’s crazy to see that in writing, crazy and incredibly intimidating, but like I said, sharing these goals with you helps keep me accountable. On a date to be determined, The Story of Home will be offering decorating services! The current plan is to offer online decorating, one day decorating, and full service decorating. I could not be more thrilled for the opportunity to pursue my passion in this capacity!

Well there you have it! I’m looking forward to a productive season, but I definitely want to take advantage and enjoy these last few days of summer.
