DIY Paneled Walls by Marcus Design

I spotted this picture the other day on Pinterest and immediately loved the paneled wall.

Turns out this is the home of Nancy from Marcus Design. She shares a great tutorial on how she transformed the walls in her living and dining room.

Adding this architectural detail is a great way to create a unique and custom space. Plus you can do it yourself! I can’t wait to try this out in our new space!

Butcher Block Countertops

It’s true what they say, kitchens sell houses. As Brad and I have started house hunting, I’ve slowly come to grips with the fact that most houses will not offer my ideal kitchen. So as I dream about how I would renovate a space to create a beautiful kitchen, butcher block countertops come to mind. Other than the fact that they add great warmth and texture, I didn’t know much about butcher block, so I did some looking and here’s what I found:

  • The inevitable stain or scratch can easily be removed with light sanding.
  • They’re easy to clean with mild soap and water.
  • You will need to periodically apply mineral oil to protect them from drying out.

From what I’ve read online so far, I’m loving the idea of using butcher block as countertops. They certainly look great in these kitchens...

Not only do they look great, they’re affordable as well! I will definitely keep butcher block in mind if I have a kitchen renovation in my future.

Things I Love

Sunburst Mirrors

I honestly can’t believe I have been blogging for a year now and have never publicly declared my love for sunburst mirrors! I know they are no longer the hottest new design trend, but I honestly can’t see them going out of style anytime soon. Their unique shape adds visual interest and is sure to make a statement in any room. Take a look:

I am fortunate enough to own a sunburst mirror; it’s currently sitting packed in a box in storage (otherwise I’d show you). After a year of searching for the perfect design, I found mine at Home Goods for a great deal. If you’re looking for a sunburst mirror, here are a few that I’ve found:

1          2         3          4          5          6          7          8         9

So what do you think? Do you love sunburst mirrors as much as I do?

A Playroom Design Board

Well, we made it back to Michigan, and I’m not going to lie, it’s a little hard to get back into the swing of things after being gone for over a week. So I’m warning you now posts may be a bit sporadic over the next week or so.

However, I recently put together a design board for a playroom, and I wanted to share that with you. I’ve touched a little on design for kids, noting some great basics and accessories, and this board reflects both. I’ve kept the main furniture neutral so that down the road you can have a whole new look just by switching out some accessories.

I especially love the art for this room. The “You Are Loved” piece is by Katie Daisy and can be found on her Esty shop, The Wheatfield. The “World Map” piece is by Kimberly Moore and can be found on her Esty shop, Third Floor Design. Kimberly also writes a great blog; it’s one of my favorites!

Moving Day

It’s moving day at the Porter house! I’ll be taking the week off as we drive across the country. But I did want to give you a sneak peak at the new house...

Just kidding! I wish this was our new house; the exterior and landscaping are absolutely beautiful! Enjoy your week, and I’ll be back next week when we’re home safe and sound in Michigan!
