A DIY Mirrored Dresser

A mirrored dresser adds elegance and sophistication to any room.

I would love to incorporate one into our master bedroom one day, but they can be expensive! I came across this great DIY mirrored dresser through the Better Homes and Gardens weekly decorating newsletter.

I love the idea, and though I’m not sure of the total cost of this DIY project, I’m quite sure you’d be saving money, especially if you found the dresser from a thrift store. Now if only I could find a way to antique the mirror to mimic the look of this dresser from Anthropologie...

Any ideas?

Risky Business

Oak Ridge Revival

This week Andrea from Oak Ridge Revival is here sharing a risky choice she made while designing the bedrooms in her home. Take it away Andrea!

When posed the question, "what is the biggest biggest risk I have taken when it comes to design?" I immediately thought of the painted ceilings in all of our bedrooms.  I knew from the beginning of our home renovation that I wanted to incorporate color on the ceilings of our home.  I wasn't sure I would love it, so rather than having the color added to the ceilings of our main living spaces, the kitchen and family room, I decided to play it somewhat safe and take the risk in the bedrooms.

I saw an image years ago of a little boy's room with light tan walls and a sky blue ceiling.  I used that image as my inspiration for my boys' room.  The walls are painted with Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige and the ceiling is Sherwin Williams Upward.

In my little girl's room, the ceiling was also painted blue.  Originally we had her walls painted a very pale pink and her ceilings done in a pale yellow.  I grew tired of that quickly and we changed it just a year and a half later.  The walls are now painted in Sherwin Williams White Duck and the ceilings are done in Benjamin Moore Bird's Egg Blue.

The master bedroom was painted in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt and we added a hint of color to the ceiling with Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige.  I love the calming effect of these two colors.

The ceiling color stands out a bit more in this photo.

I used to be so afraid to take risks with decorating my home.  The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to be yourself.  My home is a reflection of me and my family and we all take great pride it making it our own.

Thanks for sharing your design risk Andrea; I love the character those painted ceilings add to the rooms. I love when she mentioned how her home reflects her and her family; that’s what it’s all about, your home telling your story! Be sure to check out Andrea’s blog Oak Ridge Revival; you’re sure to love it.

Risky Business

Danielle Oakey Interiors

I’m so excited for week three of the Risky Business series! In case you missed weeks one & two, you can find them here and here. This week Danielle, from Danielle Oakey Interiors, is here sharing a risky design choice she made for her daughter’s room...

Hi, I am Danielle from Danielle Oakey Interiors.
I am so excited to be a part of this series.
I love seeing people take risks in their interiors, especially when they pay off!

A couple of months ago I painted thick black & white stripes in my daughters bedroom.
I was a little nervous at first but SO happy with the results.

I think they complete the room.

The wall that I painted the stripes on is angled.
This detail was not noticeable until the stripes were painted.

I love them!

I can't wait to take another big risk in my home!
Thanks so much for having me.

xoxo,

I love the bold black and white stripes; this was a design risk that definitely paid off! I agree with Danielle; the stripes complete the room and really bring the design full circle. I’m a huge fan of Danielle’s work; I was especially inspired by a recent post of hers where she notes that in design the details count. Be sure to check out Danielle Oakey Interiors; you won’t be sorry!

I Made a Wreath!

Actually, I made two wreaths, and I love them! After I shared some inspiring wreaths, I decided to make both a book page wreath and a push pin wreath. I tackled the book page wreath first; my favorite part about this one is that it was free! I followed a tutorial by The Shabby Creek Cottage and was thrilled with the results.

A few days later I started making the push pin wreath. Although it wasn’t free it was still very inexpensive: $6 for a wreath form and $4 for four boxes of push pins from the dollar store; $10 total, not too shabby. For this wreath I followed a tutorial by Madigan Made. I love the texture of this wreath!

Both wreaths were really easy to make, and I felt such a sense of accomplishment when I was finished. It’s fun to have something I created on display in my home.

Great Projects from Numbered Street Designs

Amber from Numbered Street Designs was the latest designer featured in the Risky Business series, and I wanted to share a couple of her latest projects that I just love! She made these beautiful dining room chair slipcovers.

I love the fabric and the amazing ruffle detail! Amber also recently shared instructions on how to make DIY striped curtains, and if you’ve been following The Story of Home, you know what a sucker I am for horizontal stripes

Numbered Street Designs is only one of the many wonderful, inspiring blogs I follow; you can find more under my favorite blogs tab.

Rugs for the Master Bedroom

It’s been a slow process designing our master bedroom; I’ve bought so many things on a whim for this room only to end up returning them, so as I’m researching new additions to the room I want to make sure it will last. That being said, I was looking for rugs and came across a wide variety. Each of these rugs would create an entirely different look when combined with our new duvet cover.

Take a look; let me know what you think...

I’m still undecided; do you have a favorite? Let me know; leave a comment!

Risky Business

Numbered Street Designs

Amber from Numbered Street Designs is here to kick off the second week in the Risky Business series! She shares a risky design choice and tells us how it’s paid off; take it away Amber...

The biggest design risk I have taken that has paid off was probably the paint color in my living and dining room.

It's Antique Pewter by Benjamin Moore. It's definitely a dark color, and the general rule is that dark colors make a room look smaller. Before I painted the room I showed my friend the paint swatch. When she saw the room after it was painted she was totally blown away. She told me that she originally thought the color was too dark and that I was making a crazy decision. She and her husband both loved the room. My friend told me she would be calling me for the name of the color when she buys her first home! I have received many positive comments on the paint color. I knew it was a bold choice. It was a lot of paint, and the living and dining room are the first rooms you see when you come in the door, but the rooms have large windows and beautiful crown moldings and built-ins that I wanted to accent. I went with my gut and it totally paid off!

Thanks so much for sharing Amber; I love the color you chose! Be sure to check out Amber’s blog Numbered Street Designs where you can find these and more pictures of her beautiftul home.

A Nursery Design Board

I’ve researched and written about designing for kids, gathered lists of great basics and accessories, and now I’m ready to reveal a nursery design board.

I love the vintage pieces like the crib and chandelier paired with the more modern lines of the changing table and rug.   And here’s a closer look at that artwork...

Isn’t it precious? It’s from Sarah Jane Studios. This design was so much fun to create; it’s soft, delicate, and just plain girly!

Jar Pendant: A DIY Look for Less

A few weeks ago I pinned this beautiful jar pendant from Pottery Barn

I love how industrial and casual it feels and could definitely see this smaller version above the kitchen sink in my dream home someday.

I wondered if this could be a DIY project so I did a little research and sure enough, I came across this tutorial on Design Sponge

I love how they varied the colors of the jars! I may just have to try this someday...would you ever attempt a DIY project like this?

Risky Business

Third Floor Design Studio

I’m thrilled to have Kimberly from Third Floor Design Studio here today to share her thoughts on taking risks.

I think taking risks is important in design. It's what defines your style and sets you apart. I have had my fare share of projects that just didn't work like I'd anticipated but sometimes these "projects gone wrong" actually turn out better!

One project that kind of just "happened" was my paint chip wall. I'd seen so many creative uses with paint chips and wanted to try something in my own apartment. I ended up coming home with quite a few and as I looked around there was one bare wall just screaming for attention! Within a few hours I had the complete color wheel adorning my wall {and then some}!

I was definitely nervous what people would think, but in the end, it cost hardly a cent and the statement that it made was worth it. I got such a great response when I featured it on my blog, and if nothing else, I had a killer conversation piece for anytime we had visitors!

Thanks so much to Kimberly for sharing her design risk; it definitely paid off! She also has some great DIY tutorials; I especially love her DIY paper wheel art! Be sure to check out Kimberly’s blog; it’s full of inspiring design ideas!

Things I Love

Polka Dots

I love polka dots. They’re a fun, whimsical pattern that can be introduced to any space through fabric, window treatments, rugs, or accessories. Similar to horizontal stripes, polka dots can be appropriate in spaces designed for adults and children. Polka dots also offer versatility because they are easy to pair with a number of other patterns. Here are a few of my favorite spaces incorporating the beloved polka dots...

So what do you think? Do you love polka dots as much as I do?

Nursery Design Board: Sneak Peak

I’m currently creating a design board for a baby girl’s nursery, and while it’s not quite finished, I couldn’t resist giving you a sneak peak of some of the fabrics.

These fabrics bring the perfect touch of elegance and femininity to the space. I can’t wait to reveal the rest of the design, coming soon!
