Designing for Kids: The Basics

Designing for kids is so much fun, but it can also be a challenge at times. It’s important to find a balance of whimsy and functionality. I always try to incorporate basic pieces that will transition with the kids as they grow. A lot of these pieces are neutral; this ensures you can get the most use out of each item. Then, down the road, it’s easy to change the look of a room by incorporating accent colors through pillows, art, and accessories. Here are some of my favorite pieces to incorporate into designs for kids!

The Expedit Bookcase from Ikea is a great transitional piece because you can use it to store toys when the kids are younger and later use it as a bookcase when they're older.

I also love these canvas bins for storing toys in the bookcase. They help keep things organized and looking pretty!

The patterns of these rugs are so fun!

And here are some great light fixtures that definitely make a statement. I especially love the idea of a chandelier in a nursery, so sweet!

This is the Hemnes dresser from Ikea, another great transition piece! It can easily be used as a changing table in the nursery and then later as a dresser.

This low platform bed is perfect for young kids climbing in and out of bed. Later you can add a box spring to raise the height for when the kids get older!

Last but not least, this side table would be great in a nursery next to a chair and can later be used as a bedside table.

I hope you enjoyed some of my favorite basics when designing for kids! Please share your favorites! Leave a comment or email, I'd love to see!
